Crafting an ICC Little Annie Rib Insert Pad

In medical simulation training, attention to detail is paramount. A standout innovation is the ICC Little Annie Rib Insert Pad, crafted by Simulation Assistant Bill Nancarrow, to boost realism in ICC insertion training. With 3 years at CSDS, Bill focuses on refining training tools and methods for better learning results.

Follow this step-by-step guide to craft your own ICC Little Annie Rib Insert Pad.

Materials required

  • 1 x Pack of Skin for Crico-Trainer “Frova” & “Pig” REF: 30-14-222
  • 2 x Sheets of 3M Reston foam, REF: 1560M (S4 Hanna number 10007604)
  • 1 x Standard ruler
  • 1 x Stanley knife or scalpel
  • 1 x Stapler with 26/6 chisel point staples

Directions

Step 1: Preparing the Skin

Grab one piece of the Skin for Crico-Trainer and mark it at 130cm intervals to yield 3 pieces. Cut out the marked pieces as needed for your training course.

Step 2: Cutting the foam

Take the 3M Reston foam sheet and mark it at 12cm x 7.5cm dimensions. Cut out the marked pieces according to your requirements.

Step 3: Assembling

Fold the Skin lengthwise over the foam. Use the stapler to secure the Skin and foam together. Place staples at the top, middle, and bottom ends. Repeat on the opposite end.

Step 4: Trimming

With caution, use the Stanley knife or scalpel to cut along the marked enclosure, ensuring to cut only the top area that is clearly marked in the following pictures.

Step 5: Applying the Pad

Slide the ICC Little Annie Rib Insert Pad onto the part task trainer’s rib, ensuring proper alignment and positioning. Apply one pad to each side, making sure that the plastic backing on the foam is against the rib as shown in the photo.

Step 6: Finalising the Pad

ICC Little Annie Rib Insert Pad is now ready for use. Repeat the process to create the required number of Pads for your training course.

Cost for one Rib Insert Pad

  • Pack of Skin for Crico-Trainer “Frova” & “Pig” REF: 30-14-222 – $0.72 cents
  • 2 sheets of 3M Reston foam, REF: 1560M – $0.15 cents
  • Labour cost: Bill makes 30 pads in 25 minutes to run an ICC Course – $26.10

Conclusion

With careful attention to detail and adherence to this guide, high-quality ICC Little Annie Rib Insert Pads can be crafted to significantly enhance the realism and effectiveness of medical simulation training. This innovative solution is designed to elevate the learning experience for healthcare professionals in a meaningful and practical way.
