Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Safe Infant Sleeping Sleep Safe

Online course

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Safe Infant Sleeping eLearning course aims to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioners with accurate and current evidence-based information about sudden unexpected deaths in infancy and fatal sleeping accidents, and the infant care practices demonstrated to reduce the risk of infant death. It also seeks to support staff in all acute and community facilities that care for families with young infants to practise, demonstrate, and actively promote safe sleeping environments known to reduce the risk of sudden infant death and fatal sleeping accidents.

Brief Interventions for a Healthy Lifestyle – Maternity and Child Health

Online course

The Brief interventions for a healthy lifestyle: Maternity and child health course introduces the concept of brief intervention. It also provides guidance on how you can conduct brief interventions with women and families about making healthy lifestyle choices. Modules include an introduction to brief interventions; alcohol; tobacco; other drugs; oral health; optimal nutrition; supporting health weight gain; physical activity and child health 0-2 years. Each module will take approximately 10 min to complete and includes two case studies with Multiple Choice questions at the end.

Introduction to Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation

Online course

This ONLINE learning course provides the fundamental knowledge required for Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation (PIVC) in an adult. The course covers the underpinning theory including preparation, the aseptic approach and insertion technique.

The online learning component has been designed to be complimented with a face-to-face workshop focusing on the practical skills needed to safely perform PIVC. Completing the online learning alone will not enable transition to clinical practice.

Neonatalogy Resource Package

Online course

The package is an online resource, with links to all the locally available educational resources, handbooks and guidelines in the Grantley Stable Neonatal Unit. The resource package is designed for medical doctors, nurses and students involved in the care of neonates. It is free, and can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from your home computer, tablet or smartphone.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG)

RANZCOG is dedicated to the establishment of high standards of practice in obstetrics and gynaecology and women’s health. The College trains and accredits doctors throughout Australia and New Zealand in the specialties of obstetrics and gynaecology so that they are capable of providing the highest standards of healthcare.

Fetal Surveillance Education Program

Online course

The new OFSEP is a free online program that offers individual login, with capability to track individual progress, online quizzes and a certificate on completion. The new OFSEP will be available for a 12 month period (March to February) each year. Every March the OFSEP course will be refreshed and be available for another 12 months.

Iron Deficiency Anaemia:Maternity

Online course

Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia are common in pregnancy and are associated with adverse outcomes for the mother, the fetus, and the baby. This case study follows a 32-year-old woman who is pregnant with her third child. The areas covered include the:

  • importance of early identification
  • diagnosis and treatment of pregnant women with iron deficiency, with or without anaemia

This course is one of six related courses on iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) in different clinical settings and with increasing complexity of diagnosis and treatment.

Patient Blood Management: Obstetrics

Online course

This Obstetric Blood Management course will provide you with knowledge to apply blood management strategies in the care of pregnant women in the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods. On completion of this course you should be able to:

  • define the principles and application of blood management for women receiving obstetric care
  • explain the reasons for the routine haematology tests that are recommended during pregnancy
  • state how to assess, investigate and manage iron deficiency and/or anaemia in pregnant women
  • recognise pregnant women who are at increased risk of bleeding and assess and manage these risks
  • discuss expert consensus guidelines for the use of blood products for pregnant women and apply these to clinical practice.

Queensland Health

QCG is a well-established website with multiple maternity and neonatal Guidelines. Also available are learning resources, consumer information and what’s coming. Below are the listed maternity Guidelines, the neonatal guidelines are not listed.

Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC)

The Australian Resuscitation Council is a voluntary co-ordinating body which represents all major groups involved in the teaching and practice of resuscitation. The ARC produces Guidelines to meet its objectives in fostering uniformity and simplicity in resuscitation techniques and terminology.

The Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand (PSANZ) is a multidisciplinary society dedicated to improving the health and long term outcomes for mothers and their babies.

Stillbirth Centre of Research Excellence

The Safer Baby Bundle for Australian maternity healthcare professionals is a collection of change ideas or interventions designed to reduce late pregnancy stillbirth. The interventions are based on evidence summaries developed in partnership with the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand (PSANZ). Development of the SBB has drawn from the expertise and experience of international advisors from the UK Saving Babies Lives Bundle of care.

A Safer Baby Bundle Handbook and Resource Guide has been created as an informational support to assist maternity healthcare professionals with implementation of the Bundle. Free and accredited CPD training for healthcare professionals is available from e-learning modules.

Australian College of Midwives (ACM)

Australian College of Midwives is the national peak body for Australian midwives whose mission is to position and profile midwifery as the primary profession for quality maternity care through advocacy, CPD and support.

Green-top Guidelines Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG – UK)

The RCOG produces guidelines as an aid to good clinical practice. The guidelines present recognised methods and techniques for clinical practice, based on published evidence, for consideration by obstetricians/gynaecologists and other relevant health professionals. A number of the RCOG guidelines are used in Australia.
