It’s been a busy few months for the Queensland Innovation Living Lab (QuILL) team, who continue to lead the way in improving the safety, usability, and performance of healthcare technologies.
Most recently, Dr Mia McLanders was invited to deliver the keynote address at Looking Ahead: HealthTech & MedTech Innovation in Queensland. Her presentation QuILL and the Science of Design, explored the vital role of Human Factors in the development of medical technologies.

Mia’s insights were a powerful reminder that in healthcare, good design isn’t just about aesthetics or ease of use – it’s about patient safety, clinical effectiveness, and better outcomes. She stressed that when products are tested in real clinical settings, the results are often dramatically different. In high-pressure environments like hospitals and medical practices, assumptions aren’t just risky – they can be dangerous and costly.

That’s where Living Labs like QuILL come in. By combining design consultation, rapid prototyping, and high-fidelity simulation, QuILL enables MedTech teams to test and refine solutions in realistic healthcare settings – well before they reach patients or frontline staff.

At CSDS, we share this commitment by using simulation and collaborative design to drive innovation and improve patient care. Whether through our multifaceted education programs or expert teams like QuILL, we believe the future of healthcare lies in research-informed design rooted in real-world clinical practice.
