The Maternity Education team at CSDS is thrilled to announce that we are taking the Maternity Emergency Program to regional, rural, and remote facilities. This initiative is made possible through the funding received under the Rural and Regional Birthing Services 2023-24 budget measure. What is the Maternity Emergency Program?

The Maternity Emergency Program (MEP) is an interprofessional immersive simulation-based training program to enhance systematic team approach to managing maternity emergencies.

MEP courses are 8 hours of face-to-face education and meet the Clinical Services Capability Framework requirements for mandatory maternity emergency training. The courses are both accredited for CPD points with Australian College of Midwives (ACM) and The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG).

Maternity Emergency Program courses

MEP offers two courses:

MEP-FC is a one-day simulation workshop designed for clinicians new to maternity care, rotating back to the birthing environment, or employed in services with low exposure to birthing. MEP-FC is case-based, following a woman’s labour, birth, and postnatal period with management of a fixed set of complications, including shoulder dystocia, post-partum haemorrhage and postpartum sepsis. Learning is scaffolded through case discussion, practical skill stations and immersive simulation.

MEP-ADV is an immersive simulation focused course aimed at maternity staff with extensive experience in birthing care working in maternity services. As a bespoke course, facilitators choose different case-based scenarios depending on participant-identified learning needs for immersive simulations, skill stations and debrief exercises.
