Sheena is a practising midwife of 40 years having worked in the National Health Service (NHS) in UK for most of that time. As one of UK's first midwife consultants, she successfully helped lead the development of three birth centres in East Lancashire. Sheena also acts as a consultant to various NHS Trusts and other global organisations helping them support normal, physiological childbirth.

Together with her daughter- Dr Anna Byrom, who's also a midwife, they are the proud joint owners of "The Practising Midwife Journal" and All4Maternity. All4Maternity is an online platform for learning and sharing of all midwives and maternity care workers.

Apart from being an international speaker, Sheena is also the author of "Catching Babies: A Midwife's Tale", a Sunday Times best seller, and "Squaring the Circle: researching normal childbirth in a technological world". Together with Professor Soo Downe, she co-edited "The Roar Behind the Silence: why kindness, compassion and respect matter in maternity care", a seminal book currently used globally as a resource to improve maternity services.

Sheena was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2011 for her contributions in the field of midwifery. She is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Midwives and a Visiting Fellow at Bournemouth University. In 2016 and 2018, she received honorary doctorates from Bournemouth University and the University of Central Lancashire respectively.

Sheena is committed to (1) humanising childbirth, (2) maximising normal physiological birth processes, and (3) ensuring all women have a positive birth experience. She continues to work on reversing the global onslaught of medical technology as a means to improve childbearing safety.
